Automotive - Improve Fuel Efficiency

Our Goal for the Automotive Industry: Improve Fuel Efficiency

Smart sensors help improve the control mechanisms of modern automotive power trains. Improvements in engine, transmission and steering systems deliver greater fuel efficiency and power density so that today’s smaller and lighter power trains provide significantly more output power than in the past.

The Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards call for lower CO and NOx emissions from passenger cars.  Meeting the new requirement for Nox is especially important since these emissions must be diminished by a factor of 10 between the years 2000 and 2014.  This means that power trains must perform even better than they do today.  ZMDI is doing its part to support automobile manufacturers by providing sensor interfaces and sensor conditioners that cope with the new emission reduction standards.

Applications for Sensing Devices

  • Battery Monitoring: ZMDI devices support the demanding battery sensing market. Start-Stop Automatic in Micro-Hybrid vehicles reduces fuel consumption, especially during rush hour in metropolitan areas. With our integrated circuits, it’s possible to realize an 8% fuel efficiency improvement. Not only the system solution saves energy, the ZMDI IC itself has a low-power mode to run at an average current of 100uA.
  • Variable Valve Timing: ZMDI sensor signal conditioners are used invariable valve timing to support accurate angle measurement. Engine efficiency is improved by optimizing the lift and timing of each valve for different engine speeds. With ZMDI integrated circuits. Systems can increase fuel efficiency by as much as 5%.
  • Diesel Feed Pump Pressure Control: ZMDI’s highly accurate and reliable sensor signal conditioners for pressure measurement in diesel feed pumps help increase fuel efficiency by as much as 12%, making them a key component in direct fuel injection systems.
